President Irro Reaffirms Commitment to Holding Elections on Schedule

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), accompanied by the Vice President, H.E. Mohamed Aw Cali Abdi, today held a high-level meeting with the National Electoral Commission (NEC) at the Presidential Palace.

This meeting, the first between the President and the NEC since assuming office, focused on key electoral matters, including preparations for the upcoming joint elections scheduled for May 31, 2026. The President expressed his appreciation for the Commission’s efforts in advancing Somaliland’s democratic process and acknowledged their dedication to ensuring credible elections.

During the discussions, the NEC presented an overview of their ongoing work, including a post-election review of the November 13, 2024, presidential elections, highlighting lessons learned and areas requiring improvement. The Commission also outlined the financial requirements necessary for the successful execution of the upcoming elections.

President Cirro commended the NEC for their professionalism and commitment in overseeing the presidential elections and urged them to continue enhancing the electoral process through comprehensive reforms and efficiency measures. He emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences to strengthen electoral integrity and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in the future.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, the President assured the NEC that the 2026 joint elections will proceed as scheduled without any delays. Furthermore, he pledged that the government would provide the necessary financial and logistical support to facilitate the electoral process.

In closing, the President directed the NEC to develop a detailed Election Roadmap outlining the necessary steps and timelines for the parliamentary and local council elections to be held on May 31, 2026.
