The 14th session of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Somaliland, chaired by His Excellency President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Irro), was held today at the Presidential Palace. The meeting addressed key national priorities, including security, economic growth, infrastructure development, and social progress.
Key Deliberations and Outcomes
1. National Security and Regional Stability
The Minister of Interior and Security provided an update on the country’s security situation, confirming that Somaliland remains stable apart from routine criminal activities and traffic incidents. The Minister emphasized the need for heightened national vigilance in response to geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and the broader regional landscape.
2. Economic Growth and Revenue Performance
The Minister of Finance and Economic Development reported a 19% increase in national revenue for the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year compared to the same period in 2024. He highlighted ongoing improvements in tax collection, particularly the integration of taxation systems for the energy and telecommunications sectors, which is expected to further strengthen national revenue.
3. Drought Response and Water Security
The Minister of Water Resources Development provided an assessment of drought conditions and water shortages in the eastern regions. The Cabinet underscored the urgency of a coordinated national response to mitigate the impact and ensure sustainable water access for affected communities.
4. Advancing Youth and Sports Development
The Minister of Youth and Sports briefed the Cabinet on recent and upcoming sports initiatives. He reported the successful completion of regional football championships in Awdal and Saaxil, as well as the National Sports Stakeholders’ Conference.
Plans are underway to hold elections for the leadership of the Somaliland Football Federation, Basketball Federation, and Athletics Federation. Additionally, preparations are in progress for a nationwide multi-sport tournament set to take place in Hargeisa in August 2025.
5. Strengthening National Media and Cultural Heritage
The Minister of Information, Culture, and Awareness reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a responsible and impartial national media. He affirmed that public media platforms will serve as a source of accurate and balanced information, promoting national unity and the public interest. Furthermore, preparations for the National Cultural Conference of Somaliland are advancing.
6. Government Engagement During Eid al-Fitr
Ministers who were deployed to different regions for Eid al-Fitr celebrations reported that communities warmly welcomed the government’s participation. Their engagement reinforced the strong connection between the administration and the people of Somaliland.
7. Peacebuilding and Integration of Civilian Forces
The President reviewed ongoing peace efforts and the integration of civilian forces in the Sanaag region, particularly in Ceerigaabo, where significant progress has been achieved. He acknowledged the role of the Vice President and the delegation leading the initiative. Additionally, the President expressed optimism regarding the ongoing peace process in Ceel-Afweyn and announced plans to extend the civilian force integration program to other eastern regions.
