His Excellency, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro today presided over the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Berbera Electricity Expansion and Modernization Project, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing Somaliland’s energy infrastructure. The President was accompanied by senior government officials, local leaders, and representatives from key institutions, underscoring the national significance of this project.
With an investment of $20 million, financed by the World Bank, this initiative will expand and upgrade Berbera’s electricity supply, providing residents and businesses with affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. This milestone reflects the government’s broader strategy to modernize Somaliland’s power sector and support Berbera’s role as a vital economic hub.
During the ceremony, the Mayor of Berbera and the Governor of Saaxil Region highlighted the project’s impact on meeting the city’s growing energy demands, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality electricity for all residents. The Minister of Energy and Minerals outlined the project’s key components, including:
✅ 12MW solar power generation
✅ 36MW energy storage system
✅ Infrastructure upgrades for increased efficiency and reliability
This initiative is a cornerstone of the government’s long-term vision for sustainable energy solutions, ensuring Berbera remains a leading driver of economic growth.
Addressing the gathering, President Irro reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering tangible progress, stating:
“We are here to fulfill our promises, not to make empty declarations. Our commitment was clear—electricity costs in Berbera will be reduced to 0.20%. I am proud to announce that, starting next month, this commitment will be realized.”
This bold initiative aligns with the government’s agenda to boost industrial productivity, enhance public services, and improve the standard of living across Somaliland.
As Somaliland’s primary port city and trade gateway, Berbera plays a crucial role in national and regional development. The expansion and modernization of its energy infrastructure will:
