Somaliland: President Launches Military Reform and Modernization Initiative

His Excellency, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, today presided over the first meeting of the Committee on the Census, Reform, and Modernization of the National Armed Forces. This high-level committee has been tasked with developing strategic policies to enhance the structure, efficiency, and modernization of Somaliland’s defense forces.  

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Minister of Interior and National Security, as well as the commanders of the various branches of the National Armed Forces.  

During the session, the President received a detailed security briefing from the Minister of Interior and senior military officials, who reaffirmed that Somaliland’s security remains stable and that the armed forces are fully prepared to defend the nation and its citizens against any threats. They also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance military readiness, improve coordination among security agencies, and modernize defense capabilities to address emerging challenges.

President Irro officially launched the committee’s mandate, effective immediately, and set a 30-day deadline for completing its objectives. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement while emphasizing that defending Somaliland’s sovereignty remains a national duty.  

His Excellency underscored that modernizing and unifying the armed forces is essential for long-term stability, security, and national resilience. He urged the committee and military leadership to adopt international best practices and ensure Somaliland’s defense forces are equipped to meet evolving security challenges.
