Somaliland: Vice President Launches Nationwide Livestock Treatment Initiative

The Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland and Acting President, H.E. Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, today officially launched a large-scale livestock treatment initiative led by the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Development. This program is set to provide essential veterinary care for over 500,000 livestock across multiple regions of Somaliland, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s primary economic sector.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Ministry of Livestock headquarters, was attended by key government officials, including ministers, director generals, veterinarians, and technical experts overseeing the project. Addressing the gathering, speakers underscored the importance of this initiative in enhancing livestock health, increasing productivity, and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Senior officials, including the Deputy Minister of Livestock and Rural Development and the Ministry’s Director General, elaborated on the critical role of this program in strengthening the livestock sector. The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mahmoud Cige Yusuf, commended the initiative as a timely intervention, particularly during the challenging dry season.

Hon. Omar Shucayb Mohamed, Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, highlighted that this project is an integral component of this administration’s policy framework. As part of the government’s 100-day action plan, the initiative includes nutritional support, parasite control, and disease prevention measures to enhance livestock resilience.

In his keynote address, Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, applauded the Ministry’s efforts, reaffirming the government’s steadfast commitment to prioritizing the livestock sector, which remains the foundation of Somaliland’s economy and rural livelihoods.
